Custom Design: Glass Deck Railing with Custom Powder Coat

A recent installation featured custom powder coated posts and top cap to surround 1/2″ Clear Tempered Glass glass to create a glass deck railing in Jenner, CA.   The railing system was a collaborative design effort between the project team and really captures the essence of the view. Using off the shelf components, two local steel fabricators, 1/2″ Clear Tempered Glass, and a local powder coater – the project accomplish the architect and owner’s design intent.

Deck Railing with 27/32″ Thick Glass

We are finishing up the installation of a 27/32″ thick glass railing system, using a CRL Base Shoe.  The glass consists of two pieces of 3/8″ thick clear tempered glass with a Dupont Sentryglas Interlayer that is .060 thick.  Here are some photos taken during the installation.  This project was also featured in a previous blog post on options for structural glass railings.

Dupont Sentryglas in Sound Studio for Superior STC Rating

We recently worked on a sound studio in Sonoma County .  We used glass with Dupont’s Sentryglas Laminated Interlayer in both the interior glass and exterior windows and doors.  The interior sound studio glass consisted of 1 1/16″ and 3/4″ thick tempered laminated glass units with .060 Sentryglas Interlayers.   The exterior windows and doors were Fleetwood Bronze Anodized Aluminum with Sentryglas Interlayer in laminated glass assembled into insulated units with PPG’s SolarBan 60 Lowe Tempered to meet Wildland Urban Interface Code requirements.

The hardest part of the project was getting the glass into the openings.  To get the interior glass installed it required close coordination with Old Town Glass and the General Contractor’s Crew in order to move the glass into place using Forklifts, Gradalls, Man Power, and rollers to get the glass to the opening inside the building.

Frameless Shower Door and Toilet Room Enclosure in San Francisco Project

This project featured a Toilet Room and Shower Enclosure in a Master Bathroom of a residential project.  The designer designed these units to be mirror images of each other.  On the Toilet Room, Satin Etch glass on Starphire was used.  On the Shower Enclosure, Starphire (Clear) was used.  In order to install the units without the use of a header, the fixed glass panels in this neo angle unit were attached to U channels buried into the ceiling.  There is also u channel buried in the floor to capture the bottom of the panels.

One Project, Three Fenestration Solutions – Part 1

We are wrapping up a residential project in Marin County that utilized three different fenestration products we offer.   The project features Marvin Aluminum Clad Windows and Doors on three sides of the project and Fire Rated Wall Assemblies from Safti First on the fourth side.  The Fire Rated wall assemblies were used to satisfy code requirements for property line windows.  In order to match the Marvin Aluminum Clad Ebony Exterior and the painted wood interior, the fire rated windows were ordered with black exterior cladding on the GPX framing and white interior cladding.

The general contractor on the project then trimmed out the interiors of the fire rated windows to match the interior detailing on the Marvin windows.  A glass block window from Pacific Glass Block was used in the shower to provide a window solution for a wet location and provide obscure glass so that the neighbors can not see in.

Coastal California Glass Rail Installations with Dupont SentryGlas

The following three glass railing installations feature amazing views of the San Francisco Bay and Pacific Ocean in Marin and Sonoma Counties. By using Dupont’s  SentryGlas  laminated glass interlayer the coastal views are captured and provide a transparent barrier between the outdoor living spaces and nature.

We frequently use the Dupont’s .060 Sentry Glass Interlayer in deck rail applications where the deck railing must meet code requirements for human impact load or wind speed / wind load applications and client wants to maximize the view.  Code requirements dictate the strength a glass railing system must meet and almost all cases a top cap is required in the local area where we do our installation work.  When we need to meet code requirements but there is a desire to not have a top cap, we utilize’s Dupont’s SentryGlas.

The photos below highlight  recent Old Town Glass projects that used the Dupont .060 Sentry Interlayer in glass guard rail applications.

Tiburon Project: Interior and Exterior Railings

General Contractor: Rempe Construction

Project Team: Old Town Glass Division 7 OnSpot Welding  Danmeier Architects

This residential project in Marin County used 9/16″ Tempered Laminated Glass with the Dupont SentryGlas for both the interior and exterior railings.  The exterior railing was set in a base shoe system and a CRL stainless steel cap was used to capture the edge of the glass.   The interior railing was also 9/16″ thick, consisting of two pieces of 1/4″ tempered glass and an .060 interlayer.  A handrail was added to the glass using handrail brackets and tubular stainless steel.
