Marin Magazine Features a Project with OTG Glass Work

Marin Magazine’s April 2014 Issue features a project we worked with Tom Ganley Construction and Miles Berger, AIA on.  It features Fleetwood Windows and Doors supplied by Old Town Glass and custom 1/2″ Clear Tempered Glass Deck Railing Systems both on the exterior decks and on the interior stairs and landing.   Three years later, the photos of the project are amazing.

Old Town Glass furnishes windows and doors for all types of projects. Over the past couple months, we have worked on a number of projects that featured Marvin Windows and Doors, used in Modern Design. Here are a couple photos highlighting contemporary windows and doors. The projects range from Hotel and Resorts, new construction, and small remodels with window replacement.

The next photo set features Marvin Cumulus Gray Clad Windows and Doors with Square Sticking on a project that was designed and built by the owner in Sausalito, CA.  It features sweeping views of Sausalito, Tiburon, and San Francisco Bay.  To get the Marvin Windows and Doors onsite, we had to work with the owner, general contractor, and crane company to delivery each item to the correct floor.

John Clarke Architects, designed the project shown below that was constructed by Tom Ganley Construction in Ross, CA.   It was a major remodel to update an existing structure.   The windows and doors have a contemporary design while blending into the natural elements of the building site. We worked with Marvin Windows and Doors in order to customize the sticking and interior trim so that all of the direct glazed (fixed units) have matching interior glazing stops to the Marvin Pushout Casements used throughout the project.

The complete renovation of the Historical Mansion at the Casa Madrona Hotel in Sausalito, featured the addition of a Modern Suite below the Mansion.  Marvin Windows and Doors were used throughout the structure, including historically accurate Clad Ultimate Insert Double Hungs with Ogee Lugs.   The lower floor featured a combination of Marvin Clad Ultimate Double Hungs and Direct Glazed Polygon Corner Units and Ultimate Casements.  The below photos shows the sweeping view of San Francisco Bay, Marin County, and the East Bay from the corner unit that is glazed with 1/2″ Clear Tempered Glass.  The windows next to it are standard Marvin Ultimate Casements with Cardinal 272 Lowe glass.

Interior Shades for Windows and Doors from Marvin

Marvin recently introduced interior and exterior shades for their window and door product lines.   Their shade product is truly innovative and we encourage you to schedule an appointment for us to demonstrate this amazing new product to you. The shades are offered in both light filtering and black out options in a number of colors to complement a variety of interior finishes. Currently the shades are available on casements, awning, fixed windows, hinged and sliding doors. Marvin will  likely be adding additional products in the future.

I was at the International Builder’s show last week and got to snap a couple pictures of the Marvin IBS booth that shows some of these new shade products.  Over the next few months, Old Town Glass will be adding samples of these shades to our showroom floor.  In the meantime we do have suitcase samples and shade books available to our customers.

Aluminum Clad Wood 90 Degree Corner Window Options

With recent changes in energy codes and the desire to make fenestration products more energy efficient, butt joint and mitre corner windows are becoming less common.   Most customers assume that having double pane glass in a corner window assembly means a large post and a lot of space between the glass.  Fortunately there are a number of options on the market in both aluminum and aluminum clad wood windows that offer clean, contemporary lines.

The following photos highlight three different corner window options offered by Marvin Windows and Doors.

Frameless Structural Glass Railing, Creates a Transparent Pool Fence

Glass can be used in many unique applications.  This week, we are finishing up the installation of a structural glass railing featuring CRL’s L21 and L25 Base Shoe. It provides a transparent yet secure barrier between a hotel pool and spa, while providing an uninterrupted view of the Bodega Bay.  The glass is Structural Tempered Laminated Glass using Dupont’s .060 Sentry Interlayer.  Here are a couple photos of the Old Town Glass crew installing the glass in Bodega Bay as part of a pool and spa deck remodel project.  The base shoe for the railing is embedded in the concrete pool and spa deck giving the appearance of the glass floating out of the structure.   Custom fabricated stainless steel clamps will be added between the glass panels to help keep the panels aligned.

NFRC Video – Making Energy Efficient Choices

I recently came across a great video on NFRC’s site. The National Fenestration Rating Council, supplies energy ratings for windows and doors. With the recent code changes in California these ratings are becoming more and more critical to assisting consumers pick the correct window and door product for their use. When I first started in the industry, it was a question of what type of window do you want. . . vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum, etc. Now it is a more complex question with more discussion.  We now need to discuss product type (material), glazing, energy ratings, performance values, etc.

Check out the video to gain a better understanding of what is behind the NFRC label on a window, door, or skylight product.

For additional information on NFRC ratings, check out additional info on the NFRC website, window ratings section.

Aqua Blue Glass plus Dupont’s Sentry Interlayer, equal Cool Railing

Unique aqua blue glass, Dupont structural interlayers, custom powder coating and a lot of design work all combined for a stunning glass railing in a San Francisco residence.  . .

Thankfully this project is now completed.   The installation of  Azuria (formerly called Azurlite) interior glass guardrail and stairwell guard in San Francisco was a team effort between the GC, designer, enginner, architect, our installers, and our glass fabricator in Southern California.   The glass used in the project is tempered laminated with Dupont’s Sentry Interlayer.  The Dupont Sentry Interlayer is set between two pieces of aqua blue colored glass.  The railing and guardrail sit inside of CRL’s L56S base shoe system for 9/16″ thick tempered laminated glass.   The General Contractor recessed the base shoe into the floor and set it on a steel bracket, so that is concealed and structurally sound.  The glass was then capped with a CRL’s #304 polished stainless steel crisp corner cap that was custom powder coated per the owner’s color specifications.

For more information on tempered laminated glass deck railings, check out some of our other posts featuring Dupont’s Sentry Interlayer Glass Technology.  Dupont’s Interlayers allow very unique structurally sound glass designs.   We work with speciality glass fabricators in order to bring out clients dreams to reality with Dupont’s interlayers from railings, glass canopies, to sloped glazing.
